Today Dwarka is suffering severe water crisis. 
But just few decades back the area was full of natural water. There was enough surface water as well as ground water. Near Najaf garh, there was a huge lake. It used to be full with the water coming from Sahibi River from Rajasthan. Water from this lake used to slip into Yamuna via Kakrola. Unfortunately today lake is dried up. If we wish to solve the water problem of Delhi, we have no option but to revive the water bodies of Delhi. Delhi was inhabited by 360 villages. It has around 1000 water bodies. Many of them had glorious history.
Officially Delhi has 611 water bodies. Out of this 274 have completely dried up. Lands of some of the dried water bodies have been sold. They have no chance to be revived again. 337 water bodies which are still left with water, are in a terrible condition. You can’t pass around them without putting hanky on your nose. Actually they are not filled with water, but sewage of nearby colonies. If you want to witness the state of affairs just go and visit the Bhalaswa lake. Neela Hauz Lake in the south and Sanjay Lake in the east are going the same way. The Kakkadooma Lake in the north, which used to recharge ground water, has been converted into the Memorial Park. Most of the water bodies which are still existing on the map of Delhi, are facing encroachment.
Terrible condition of water bodies is a serious warning for all the people of Delhi. We can’t rely exclusively on the water supplied from the neighbouring states. We have no option but to revive and well maintain our water bodies. We can ask other states to share water with us, only when we are taking care of our own water bodies. We have no right to claim the water from other states, when we have least regard of our resources.
दिल्ली के भूले-बिसरे सरोवर
दिल्ली की द्वार का आज पानी की एक-एक बूंद को तरस रही है। लेकिन एक समय था जब इस इलाके में पानी के प्रचुर स्रोत थे। कुछ दशक पहले तक नजफगढ़ में एक बड़ी झील हुआ करती थी। राजस्थान की साहिबी नदी से आने वाले पानी से झील साल भर भरी रहती थी। ककरोला से होते हुए इस झील का पानी आकर यमुना में गिरा करता था। लेकिन आज झील पूरी तरह सूख गई है। दिल्ली की पानी की समस्या को दूर करना है तो हमें यहां के प्राकृतिक एवं मानव निर्मित जल स्रोतों को फिर से जिंदा करना होगा। दिल्ली में लगभग 360 गांव थे, तोयहां लगभग 1,000 वाटर बॉडीज भी थीं। इनमें से कई का तो बड़ गौरवशाली इतिहास रहा है।
अधिकारिक रूप से दिल्ली में 611 जलाशय हैं। इनमें से 274 तो बिल्कुल सूख चुके हैं। इनमें से कई जलाशयों की जमीन भी बेची जा चुकी है। जिन 337 जलाशयों में पानी है, उनके आस-पास से आप नाक पर रूमाल रखे बिना नहीं गुजर सकते। इनमें पानी नहीं बल्कि आस-पास की कालोनियों का सीवेज भरा हुआ है। अपनी आंखों से देखना है तो एक दिन भलस्वा झील को जाकर देख आइए। दक्षिण में नीला हौज झील और पूर्व में संजय झील की भी यही कहानी है। कड़कड़डूम्मा झील को तो एक नेता का स्मारक स्थल बना दिया गया है। जो जलाशय अभी दिल्ली के नक्शे पर बचे हुए हैं, वे अतिक्रमण के शिकार हैं।
जलाशयों की दुर्दशा हमारे लिए एक बड़े खतरे की घंटी है। हम दिल्ली की जनता को केवल दूसरे राज्यों के पानी के भरोसे नहीं छोड़ सकते। हमें अपने जलाशयों को दुरुस्त करना होगा। इन्हें पुन र्जीवित करने के बाद ही हमें दूसरे राज्यों से पानी मांगने काप्रयास करना चाहिए। अपने स्रोत को बर्बाद करके हम दूसरों के पानी पर हक नहीं जमा सकते।
